What is Encumbrance? Simply said its how much you can carry without becoming overloaded. This means how many items and weapons you can carry on your body before you cannot move as freely as you normally could.
In the game you have a total of 3 weapon slots, (Unless your character has combat reflexes, then they have five slots). If more than three (or five) slots are used from the below listing, a penalty of -10% total evade and -1 to dexterity per extra weapon is allotted. These are cumulative. For example, if your character doesn't have combat reflexes, and is carrying two greatswords, a long sword and a bow, and quiver of arrows, then you would have a -40% to your evade and a -4 to all dexterity-based checks, as you are encumbered.
Listed below are the number of weapon slots weapons take up and how many slots other additional items have. Please use these as a guide to determine if your character would be encumbered:
Tiny weapons may be used in bundles of 12 such as darts, sling stones and arrows use 1 full weapon slot.
Small weapons such as daggers, dirks, throwing knives or any other can carried in bundles of 4 for 1 full weapon slot.
Normal weapons use 1 slot full weapon slot.
Larger two handed weapons use two slots each.
The only way to avoid encumbrance is to have items carried in either a bag of holding or have it carried by an beast of burden or a wagon.
Beasts of burden include mules, and horses and can hold 10 slots of encumbrance.
Sleds have 8 slots of encumbrance.
Carts have 10 slots of encumbrance.
Wagons have 25 slots of encumbrance.
If an animal is carrying your weapon, it does not count as being carried by *you*.
